Mining
The Mining division includes all operations mainly engaged in the extraction of minerals or hydrocarbons (oil and gas), exploration for minerals or hydrocarbons and the provision of a variety of services to firms engaged in these activities.
Australia has a large supply of mineral, hydrocarbon and non-mineral reserves, which the Mining division extracts, processes and sells. These reserves are often high quality and close to the surface of the earth, enabling Australia’s mining division to be price-competitive on a global scale. The division is export-oriented, with exports expected to account for just over two-thirds of revenue in 2015-16.
The division’s performance depends on global trends in supply and demand for commodities, as well as pricing levels and the value of the Australian dollar.
The geographic distribution of revenue, establishments and employment within the Mining division primarily reflects the location of the mineral resources being developed. Western Australia accounts for the largest share of division revenue, employment and establishments, reflecting the state’s importance across a broad range of minerals.
